Two Spill Gates Opened at Deduru Oya Reservoir Amid Heavy Rain

Two spill gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir were opened by one foot each last night (07) due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas.

The Irrigation Engineer’s Office responsible for the reservoir took the decision after the water level rose to the spill level following several days of heavy rain in the upper and central catchment areas.

Following the opening of the gates, approximately 1,400 cubic feet of water per second is currently being released into the Deduru Oya.

Kurunegala District Disaster Management Centre Head and Deputy Director Viraj Dissanayake said the current situation does not pose a flood risk.

However, he urged residents living downstream and motorists using nearby roads to remain alert and exercise caution in the coming days, given the prevailing heavy rainfall.
