Election Commission Approves Five New Political Parties

The Election Commission has approved the registration of five new political parties.

According to the Commission, approval has been granted to the following parties: the Socialist People’s Front, the People’s Participatory Democratic Front, Maleiga Arasiyal Arangam, Sathathtuwa Kadchi, and Vilpadaee Janatha Balaya.

The approvals were issued following a year-long process of interviews conducted to evaluate applications for new political party registrations.

In 2025, a total of 83 political parties submitted applications for registration, of which 47 were shortlisted for initial interviews. After the final round of interviews, five parties were selected and granted registration.

With these additions, the Election Commission stated that the total number of registered political parties in the country has increased to 85.
