Public Must Unite Against New Anti-Terrorism Bill – IUSF

The Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) has called on the public to unite against the proposed new anti-terrorism legislation, claiming that the bill could have serious implications for democratic rights and political activities.

IUSF representative Madushan Chandrajith made the remarks while addressing a media briefing held today.

He said the government had pledged before coming to power that it would not introduce a new anti-terrorism law, but was now moving forward with legislation titled the “Protection of the State from Terrorism Act Bill.”

Chandrajith alleged that the proposed legislation could be used to restrict protests and political activities critical of the government.

He also raised concerns over provisions that would grant detention and interrogation powers to authorities, including the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence.

According to Chandrajith, certain acts committed during political meetings or processions, such as damage to public property, could potentially be classified as terrorist activities under the proposed legislation.

He argued that criminalising the expression of political views or opposition to the government would undermine citizens’ democratic rights.

Chandrajith also criticised the government over what he described as the continuation of emergency measures by successive administrations and warned that the proposed legislation could further restrict political activity.

He additionally alleged that the government was implementing measures in line with the requirements of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The IUSF representative called on the public to join efforts to oppose the proposed anti-terrorism bill.
