Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara, has stated that it is the government’s responsibility to expedite the excavation of the Semmani mass graves and ensure justice for victims through proper examination of evidence.
He made these remarks while speaking to the media after visiting the excavation site in the Semmani area on June 19.
Responding to public concerns about whether international experts should be involved in the excavation process, the Minister said that Sri Lanka’s existing criminal law framework is sufficient to handle the investigation and related proceedings.
He further stated that if evidence is confirmed, suspects can be arrested and prosecuted under domestic law. However, he noted that the matter is currently at the investigative stage and that legal action will be taken only if wrongdoing is proven.
The Minister also emphasized that there is no need to shut down the Office on Missing Persons. He added that if any misconduct by its staff is proven, appropriate investigations will be carried out.
Accusing previous administrations of failing to properly address the issue, he said the current government has allocated necessary funding and recruited staff to ensure the process is handled effectively.
“Don’t judge us by the past. People should observe and decide whether the current actions are right or wrong,” Minister Nanayakkara said.
