MP Marikar Warns of Potential Nationwide Power Outage by March

Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP S.M. Marikar has warned that Sri Lanka may face another nationwide power outage by March if the import of substandard coal continues.

He said that it has now been confirmed that the coal brought in by the first of three recently arrived coal ships is substandard. The quality inspection reports for the coal on the remaining two ships have not yet been received, he added.

Marikar explained that the use of inferior coal significantly reduces the electricity generation capacity of power plants. To compensate for this shortfall, the government may have to purchase power from private diesel plants at high costs.

He cautioned that this ongoing instability could again push the country into a power crisis in the near future.

“Without an immediate solution, the public will be severely affected,” Marikar said, stressing the urgent need to address the issue.
