Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga’s position as the world No. 1 could come under pressure after Germany’s Julian Weber produced a massive 90.40-metre throw at a European athletics competition on Saturday (15).
Weber, currently ranked No. 2 in the world in the men’s javelin, is Tharanga’s closest challenger in the World Athletics rankings. His latest performance could boost his ranking points when the standings are next updated.
However, the World Athletics ranking system is not based solely on an athlete’s longest throw. Rankings are determined using a combination of performance scores and placing scores earned at eligible competitions. As a result, Weber’s 90.40m effort does not automatically mean he will overtake Tharanga.
The battle for the world No. 1 position is expected to intensify at the Lausanne Diamond League in Switzerland on August 21, where Tharanga and Weber are expected to compete against each other.
The Lausanne meeting could provide Tharanga with an important opportunity to strengthen his position, particularly if he finishes ahead of his German rival.
Tharanga’s rise to the top of the world javelin rankings has been a major achievement for Sri Lankan athletics. With Weber closing the gap, their head-to-head contest in Lausanne is now set to carry added significance in the fight for the world No. 1 ranking.
