Trump Says He Would “Love” to See Ireland Reunified With Northern Ireland

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he would “love” to see Ireland reunified with British-administered Northern Ireland, suggesting that such a development would eventually take place.

Speaking to reporters in Dublin following a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, Trump said he believed Irish reunification would be a “fantastic thing.”

“I'd love to see it unified,” Trump said, while acknowledging that the United Kingdom would have a say in any such development.

Trump added that, in his view, reunification was likely to happen “eventually” and described it as something that would be beneficial.

Northern Ireland remains part of the United Kingdom, while the Republic of Ireland is an independent state. Any change to Northern Ireland’s constitutional status would be subject to the provisions of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, including the requirement for majority consent in Northern Ireland through a referendum.
