Government Cancels Controversial E-Passport Procurement Process

The government has decided to cancel, with immediate effect, the procurement process related to the controversial electronic passport (e-passport) project, according to Samagi Jana Balawegaya (Samagi Jana Balawegaya) MP Ajith P. Perera.

Speaking to the media, Perera said the decision was communicated to relevant bidders via email on May 29, 2026, by the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration.

He further stated that the email informed bidders that the Cabinet of Ministers had directed the immediate cancellation of the procurement process for the project.

The e-passport initiative had drawn public and political attention in recent months due to concerns raised over the procurement procedure.
