FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 Bracket and Schedule: Road to the Final Takes Shape

The FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage is beginning to take shape as the tournament moves into its expanded Round of 32 phase, marking the first time in World Cup history that 32 teams will compete in the knockout rounds.

The Round of 32 will begin on June 28, 2026, following the conclusion of the group stage on June 27. The matches will run until July 3 across venues in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, as the competition shifts into single-elimination football where every match determines progression or exit.

According to the official format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups will qualify automatically, along with the eight best third-placed teams, forming a 32-team knockout bracket. This structure creates a dynamic and partially fluid draw, with some pairings only confirmed once all group matches are completed.

FIFA has pre-arranged multiple bracket combinations to accommodate different qualification scenarios, ensuring group winners, runners-up, and third-placed teams are placed according to set rules. Group winners cannot face other group winners in the Round of 32, while teams from the same group are kept apart at this stage.

The Round of 32 will feature 16 knockout matches played over six days, with fixtures distributed across major host cities. The winners will advance to the Round of 16, continuing the path toward the final scheduled for July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

With the group stage nearing its conclusion, the full knockout picture will be finalized once the final group matches are completed, locking in the bracket for the remainder of the tournament.
