Bus Accident in Haldummulla - Driver Killed, Eight Injured

A private passenger bus travelling from Colombo to Welimada veered off the road and collided with a rock in the Uva Thenna Nayamadiththa area of Haldummulla early this morning (18), police said. The bus overturned, resulting in the death of the driver and injuries to eight passengers, including a woman and a small child.

Haldummulla police reported that the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, lost control of the vehicle after the driver’s door unexpectedly opened. The bus then struck a curb before overturning.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the road, where he was fatally injured after being run over by the bus. Local residents rushed to his aid and transported him to a hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries. Another passenger sustained serious injuries to his hand.

Four of the injured passengers, including a seven-year-old child, have been transferred to Diyatalawa Base Hospital for further treatment.
