Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Member of Parliament Nalin Bandara has stated that his party is not racist and treats all ethnic communities equally, while criticising the government over its handling of the incident involving Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the SJB, Bandara alleged that the government's actions in relation to Gnanasara Thera had undermined the dignity of the Buddhist monk's robe and said the government must take responsibility for the situation.
The MP claimed that prison officials had failed to follow established procedures and questioned why the government appointed a committee only after public criticism emerged.
He argued that the relevant authorities should have adhered to existing protocols from the outset, alleging that the incident had raised concerns about possible political interference in the work of prison officials.
Bandara also stated that religious leaders from other faiths had expressed concerns about the treatment of Gnanasara Thera, adding that the government was facing mounting criticism over the issue.
“The mobilisation of the Maha Sangha against the government is not a positive development,” he said, noting that Buddhist monks were travelling from Kandy towards Colombo.
The MP further argued that prison officials should not be held responsible for the controversy, claiming that the government's actions had placed even officers who performed their duties properly in a difficult position.
Turning to the government's economic policies, Bandara said the administration had not been elected solely to apprehend individuals accused of wrongdoing. He stressed that national development and reducing the cost of living should also be key priorities.
He criticised the government over what he described as a lack of visible progress in the economy, arguing that the public had yet to see sufficient improvements in their living conditions.
Reiterating the SJB's position on ethnic relations, Bandara maintained that the party respected all communities and rejected racism.
He also alleged that certain individuals and groups might welcome the developments involving Gnanasara Thera. Referring to an individual named Ibrahim, whom he claimed had links to the government, as well as Sri Lankan diaspora groups living overseas, he questioned whether they were pleased with the situation.
Bandara's remarks included allegations concerning the government's political conduct, its handling of the Gnanasara Thera incident and its economic performance.
The claims made by the MP at the press conference were not independently verified in his remarks.
