Lieutenant General Joel “JB” Vowell, Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC), arrived in Sri Lanka today (September 29) for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening military cooperation between the United States and Sri Lanka.
According to the U.S. Embassy in Colombo, Lt. Gen. Vowell is the highest-ranking U.S. Army officer to visit Sri Lanka, marking a significant milestone in growing Army-to-Army cooperation between the two countries.
During his visit, which will continue until October 1, Lt. Gen. Vowell is scheduled to meet with senior Sri Lankan military officials.
The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening interoperability, military readiness and defence cooperation, including upcoming joint military exercises and capacity-building initiatives.
Humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) cooperation will also be among the key areas discussed.
Lt. Gen. Vowell is also expected to address the next generation of military leaders on the role of professional armed forces in supporting regional security and stability.
U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Eric Meyer said the visit reflects the growing security partnership between the two countries, with an emphasis on training, interoperability and enhancing their ability to respond to crises.
The U.S. Embassy said the visit builds on the U.S.–Sri Lanka Land Forces Talks held in May and reflects continued U.S. engagement on security issues in the Indo-Pacific region.
