Special Warning Issued to University of Peradeniya Students Amid Flood Risk

The University of Peradeniya has issued a special warning urging students to remain vigilant due to the increasing risk of flooding caused by ongoing adverse weather conditions.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Terence Madhujith advised students, particularly those residing in hostels located along the Mahaweli River, to take extra precautions and prioritize their safety.

Heavy rainfall since last night (August 2) has caused the Mahaweli River to rise significantly. As a result, the bridge reconstruction site near the Black Bridge in Peradeniya has reportedly been inundated.

Several pieces of machinery at the construction site have been submerged, while some equipment and construction materials have been swept away by the floodwaters.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department has warned of possible flooding in several low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River over the next 24 hours.

The flood warning, issued at 12:30 p.m. today (August 3), will remain in effect until 12:30 a.m. tomorrow (August 4). It covers low-lying areas within the Divisional Secretariat divisions of Udunuwara, Udapalatha, Yatinuwara, Gangaihala Korala, Pasbage Korala, and Gangawata Korala.

The Irrigation Department has urged residents living near the Mahaweli River and in flood-prone low-lying areas to remain alert, take necessary precautions, and follow official advisories.

Authorities have also cautioned that rainy conditions are expected to continue in the coming days and have urged the public to stay informed and act with caution.
