The Department for Registration of Persons has issued a public warning after uncovering attempts by certain groups to misuse the department’s hotline number and name to obtain personal information and carry out financial fraud.
According to the department, scammers have been contacting individuals using phone numbers similar to the official hotline, including +94 11 5226126, as well as mobile numbers such as 0771167739 and 0742756098, in an effort to deceive the public.
It was further revealed that fraudsters have created a mobile application bearing the state emblem, falsely claiming to facilitate registration for a digital identity card or e-National Identity Card.
The department emphasized that it does not conduct any such registrations and urged the public not to share personal information with suspicious callers or through fraudulent platforms. Authorities also warned against a fake website, “drpgov-lk[.]com,” which has been designed to closely resemble the department’s official website.
Reiterating its stance, the Department for Registration of Persons advised citizens to remain vigilant and to avoid falling victim to these scams.
