Probe Launched Into $2.5 Million Cyber Theft Linked to Finance Ministry

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has stated that investigations have been initiated into the theft of US$2.5 million by cybercriminals through the Ministry of Finance.

She made this statement while speaking to the media after an event held at the Malwathu Maha Viharaya premises in Kandy this morning (24).

The Prime Minister said that a detailed investigation is currently underway and that necessary legal action will be taken against those involved. She also noted that Sri Lanka has received international cooperation to support the investigations.

She further assured that the government is prepared to take all necessary steps in response to the incident.

Commenting on the no-confidence motion reportedly being prepared against her by opposition parties, the Prime Minister said she would wait until it is presented in Parliament, at which point she would respond.

Stating that the opposition has made various allegations, she urged the public to understand the truth clearly.

She emphasized that the role of the opposition is vital in a democracy, including pointing out the government’s shortcomings and presenting alternative views.

However, she added that the public should consider whether the current opposition is fulfilling that responsibility effectively.
