American R&B singer Ne-Yo is facing a lawsuit in the United States over the cancellation of his planned concert in Colombo, with Sri Lankan promoter Brown Boy Presents seeking the return of more than US$284,000 it says was paid in advance.
According to Billboard, the lawsuit was filed on September 4 and names Ne-Yo, his company Compound Touring, and booking agency Independent Artist Group (IAG) as defendants. The case involves several civil claims related to an alleged breach of contract.
Brown Boy Presents says it entered into an agreement with Ne-Yo to perform at Colombo’s Sugathadasa Stadium on December 28, 2025. Under the agreement, the singer was guaranteed a performance fee of US$325,000, along with potential bonuses based on ticket sales, as well as travel and accommodation arrangements.
The promoter claims it paid at least US$284,460 toward the performance fee before the concert was cancelled.
The event was ultimately called off after Ne-Yo withdrew in early December. At the time, the singer’s team reportedly claimed that Brown Boy Presents had breached the agreement by failing to pay the required advance in full and by not making the agreed travel and accommodation arrangements.
Ne-Yo’s representatives subsequently informed the promoter that the money already paid would be retained as damages arising from the alleged contractual breach.
However, Brown Boy Presents disputes those allegations and claims that Ne-Yo and his representatives were responsible for breaching the agreement.
The promoter alleges that demands for costly travel arrangements for a group of approximately 30 people made it difficult to fulfil the contract. According to the lawsuit, the total airfare eventually approached US$93,000.
The lawsuit also cites the impact of Cyclone Ditwah and the resulting economic disruption in Sri Lanka in late November, claiming that the situation affected ticket sales and the promoter’s operations.
Brown Boy Presents is seeking the return of more than US$284,000 paid to Ne-Yo’s team, in addition to compensation for losses it says resulted from the cancellation. These alleged losses include ticket refund charges, sponsor-related losses, and expenses associated with the venue and production.
Ne-Yo’s Team Rejects Allegations
Ne-Yo’s representatives have strongly rejected the claims made in the lawsuit.
Speaking to Billboard, a spokesperson for the singer described the allegations as “categorically fraudulent and misleading.” The spokesperson maintained that Brown Boy Presents was contractually required to pay Ne-Yo in full before the performance and cover round-trip travel costs for the singer and his entire team.
The spokesperson alleged that the promoter failed to meet either obligation despite being given multiple opportunities to resolve the alleged breaches.
Ne-Yo’s representatives further claimed that it eventually became clear that Brown Boy Presents lacked the financial resources to fulfil its contractual obligations, leaving the singer with no choice but to withdraw from the concert.
The spokesperson also alleged that Ne-Yo’s team had subsequently become aware of similar allegations involving Brown Boy Presents and other parties.
Independent Artist Group declined to comment on the lawsuit, according to Billboard.
The allegations contained in the lawsuit have not been proven in court, and both sides have presented conflicting accounts of the circumstances surrounding the cancelled Colombo concert.
