The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) has announced plans to introduce mandatory quality inspections for all vehicles used in public transport, including buses, in an effort to improve road safety across the country.
NRSC Chairman Manjula Kularathna said the inspection programme is expected to commence by the end of September.
He noted that driver negligence and various mechanical defects in vehicles remain the leading causes of accidents involving public transport. In response, the Council has decided to conduct comprehensive quality inspections of all vehicles operating in the public transport sector.
Kularathna also revealed that applications have been invited from qualified technical officers to carry out the inspection process.
Once the recruitment process is completed, the Council expects to begin inspections by the end of September, with the aim of ensuring that all public transport vehicles in Sri Lanka meet the required safety and quality standards.
