King Charles III and Queen Camilla Begin US State Visit Amid Diplomatic Tensions and Heightened Security

King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived in the United States on Monday for a four-day state visit marking the 250th anniversary of US independence, with diplomatic tensions casting a shadow over the trip.

The British monarchs met with Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at the White House for tea, before attending a garden reception at the British ambassador’s residence in Washington, D.C.

The visit comes at a sensitive moment in US–UK relations, which have been strained by the ongoing conflict involving Iran. President Trump has criticised UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer over Britain’s refusal to provide military support, while the British government hopes the royal visit may help ease tensions despite the King’s obligation to remain politically neutral.

The trip is also taking place in the aftermath of a shooting incident at a press gala in Washington on Saturday, which has led to heightened security measures across the US capital.

King Charles is expected to briefly acknowledge the incident during his joint address to Congress on Wednesday.
