The Indian National Congress has thanked the people of Kerala for what it described as a “thumping victory” as counting trends indicate a strong performance for the opposition alliance.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph said the emerging verdict reflects a clear rejection of the “anti-people policies” of the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which is registering an impressive showing, credited the United Democratic Front (UDF)’s coordinated teamwork for the alliance’s strong performance across the State.
Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala secured one of the biggest victories of his political career, defeating T. T. Jismon of the Communist Party of India (CPI) by a margin of 23,377 votes in the Haripad constituency.
Kerala, one of India’s southern States, has a total of 140 Assembly constituencies.
