US-Iran Talks Focus on Strait of Hormuz and Sanctions Relief

A new report citing a US official says ongoing discussions between the United States and Iran are mainly focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and removing naval mines allegedly placed by Iran during the ceasefire period.

According to the report, negotiations are also taking place on easing certain restrictions imposed on Iranian ports and reducing sanctions on Iranian oil exports.

The discussions are said to place special emphasis on securing guarantees from Iran that it will never develop nuclear weapons or continue its nuclear enrichment program beyond agreed limits.

Reports further state that the United States is prepared to discuss lifting additional sanctions and releasing frozen Iranian funds as part of a broader agreement.

Meanwhile, US troops are expected to remain in the region for 60 days and would withdraw only after a final agreement is reached.

Axios reported that the agreement could be extended further through mutual consent between both parties.

Separately, The New York Times reported that the proposal also includes a commitment from Tehran to give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
