Just days after announcing his retirement from international cricket, former England all-rounder Ben Stokes has shown that his batting and bowling abilities remain as strong as ever by scoring a match-winning century in domestic cricket.
Stokes made his first appearance after retirement in the English County Cricket One-Day Cup, where Durham faced Derbyshire in Derby. He scored an unbeaten 108 runs to guide Durham to a five-wicket victory.
The match marked Durham’s first fixture in the 50-over competition, and Stokes impressed with both bat and ball. He delivered an economical spell, conceding only 38 runs in nine overs.
Chasing a target of 257 runs, Durham were in trouble at 98 for 3 wickets before Stokes took control of the innings. Despite suffering a muscle strain during the match, he remained unbeaten until the end, scoring 108 runs off 123 balls, including 10 fours and 3 sixes.
Earlier, Derbyshire posted 256 runs for 9 wickets in 50 overs. Durham successfully chased the target, reaching 257 for 5 wickets in 49.1 overs to secure victory with five balls remaining.
Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket following the third Test against New Zealand, bringing an end to a 15-year international career.
Reflecting on his journey, Stokes said it had been an unforgettable period filled with “the highest joys, challenges and ups and downs,” while expressing gratitude to the fans, the England team, and his teammates.
During his international career, Stokes represented England in 122 Test matches, including 44 as captain, scoring more than 7,000 runs and taking over 200 wickets. He also played 114 One-Day Internationals and 43 Twenty20 Internationals.
Although he has stepped away from international cricket, Stokes’ explosive return to county cricket has once again highlighted his status as one of England’s most influential all-rounders.
