Six battery energy storage systems imported by Windy Force Pvt. Ltd. arrived at the Colombo Port today (30), marking a key step in an ongoing national power infrastructure project.
The project follows an international competitive tender called in June last year for 16 battery storage systems with a total planned capacity of 160 megawatts. The contracts were awarded to three selected institutions.
The newly arrived systems are part of this initiative and will be installed near transmission substations in Vavuniya, Chunnakam, Kilinochchi, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa.
According to project details, each system is capable of storing 40 megawatts of electricity during the daytime and supplying 10 megawatts to the national grid during peak evening demand hours. Collectively, the six systems contribute a total operational capacity of 60 megawatts.
Officials say the battery storage project is expected to strengthen grid stability, improve energy efficiency, and support better management of peak electricity demand across the country.
