769th Devinuwara Esala Perahera Begins Today Under Tight Security

The 769th Esala Perahera of the historic Sri Uthpalawanna Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya in Devinuwara will commence today (23) and continue until August 5, with enhanced security measures in place.

The annual religious procession will begin with the traditional Kapa planting ceremony, which marks the commencement of the festivities according to longstanding customs and rituals. The celebrations will conclude with the grand Randoli Perahera.

The Devinuwara Devalaya, also known as the Uthpalawanna Devalaya, is among Sri Lanka’s most revered religious sites. Believed to have been constructed during the reign of King Dappula Sen, the shrine is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is traditionally associated with the deity Upulvan in Sri Lankan Buddhist tradition.

A unique feature of the Devinuwara Esala Perahera is its focus on traditional low-country dance performances, including the participation of several female dance groups.

This year’s procession has drawn increased attention due to recent security concerns in the area. Police are investigating a shooting incident near the Devalaya earlier this week, which is suspected to be connected to a dispute involving organized criminal groups. Authorities are also looking into alleged threats related to the organization of the procession.

Nearly 500 police officers have been deployed to ensure security throughout the duration of the event.

Authorities said the additional security arrangements are aimed at safeguarding devotees, participants and visitors attending the annual religious festival.
