WhatsApp Expands UPI Features, Introduces Mobile Recharge Option in India

WhatsApp continues to be one of the most widely used social media applications globally, with more than 510 million accounts in India alone.

Launched in 2009 and later acquired by Meta Platforms in 2014, WhatsApp has steadily introduced new features over the years, including audio and video calling, file sharing, and payment services through UPI integration.

In its latest update, WhatsApp has expanded its UPI-based services by introducing mobile phone recharge functionality. Users can now recharge SIM cards directly through WhatsApp Pay for telecom operators such as Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone.

Reports indicate that support for BSNL recharges is expected to be added soon, further broadening the app’s digital payment ecosystem in India.

The new feature is seen as part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its position in India’s growing digital payments and fintech space.
