Upland Railway Services Extended from Ambewela to Nanu Oya After Restoration Work

Railway authorities have announced that limited upland train services operating from Badulla to Ambewela have been extended up to Nanu Oya starting today (20), following the completion of major rehabilitation work on the affected railway line.

The upland railway route had been severely disrupted due to Cyclone “Tidwa” and subsequent landslides. However, after extensive repairs carried out by the Railway Department over a 23-day period, the line has now been fully restored for public use up to Nanu Oya.

The reopening ceremony was held with religious observances, attended by Nuwara Eliya District Development Committee Chairman and Member of Parliament Manjula Suraweerarachchi and Nanu Oya Senior District Railway Executive Engineer Danushka.

According to the Railway Department, the journey between Nanu Oya and Badulla covers approximately 85 kilometres and takes around 3 hours and 15 minutes by train.

Previously, services had been restricted only up to Ambewela due to damage to the track. With the latest restoration, four daily train services are now operating between Badulla and Nanu Oya.

Officials further stated that they are hopeful of resuming full train services between Colombo and Badulla by the end of this year.

Following the partial resumption, the route has once again attracted a large number of local and foreign tourists, who continue to enjoy the scenic upland journey.
