US President Donald Trump has indicated that the current ceasefire agreement with Iran is nearing its end and suggested it is “highly unlikely” he would agree to extend it if no deal is reached.
Speaking in a phone interview with Bloomberg, Trump said the ceasefire would effectively be considered over by Wednesday evening Washington time unless negotiations produce an agreement.
“It’s highly unlikely that I’d extend it,” Trump said, adding that he was “not going to be rushed into making a bad deal.”
The ceasefire, which began on April 7 and was initially set to last two weeks, was part of ongoing efforts to reduce tensions between the two sides. However, uncertainty remains over whether the truce will be extended or collapse.
When asked whether fighting would resume immediately if talks fail, Trump responded, “If there’s no deal, I would certainly expect.”
The former president has previously given mixed signals regarding the possibility of extending the ceasefire. During a recent press interaction, he was asked multiple times about an extension and gave differing responses.
