A large-scale protest, including a hunger strike against the government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, began this morning (12) in Chavakachcheri.
The protest, organized by the Democratic Tamil National Alliance, is being held at the Chavakachcheri Bus Stand complex.
Organizers claim that, although two years have passed since the Anura Kumara Dissanayake-led government came to power, no significant measures have been taken to address the concerns and interests of the Tamil people.
The hunger strike is being conducted to press for several demands, including the release of political prisoners, the return of occupied lands, justice over the Chemmani mass grave issue, and the immediate conduct of Provincial Council elections.
Several Tamil political leaders are participating in the protest, including C.V.K. Sivagnanam, Acting Leader of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi; M.A. Sumanthiran, its General Secretary; Selvam Adaikalanathan, Leader of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization and Member of Parliament; and Suresh Premachandran, Leader of the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front.
