Sevanagala Sugar Factory Shut Down Indefinitely Amid Employee Strike

The management of Lanka Sugar (Pvt) Ltd has decided to shut down its Sevanagala factory indefinitely until further notice due to ongoing strike action by employees.

In a statement, the company said the decision was taken to minimise financial losses resulting from the industrial action.

Some employees at the Sevanagala Division reportedly stopped reporting for duty from 2:00 p.m. on August 25 as part of the strike. In response, the company granted leave to all employees, except those engaged in essential services, on August 26 and 27 in an effort to limit further financial losses.

The company said its Chief Executive Officer announced on August 28 that production operations would resume.

However, management decided to close the factory indefinitely after employees continued their strike despite the resumption of operations.

The company said further updates on the reopening of the factory would be provided in due course.
