Children of migrant workers enrolled in daycare centres will receive a monthly allowance of Rs. 10,000 under a new programme introduced by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, officials informed the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Women and Child Affairs.
The announcement was made during a committee meeting chaired by Women and Child Affairs Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj, with the participation of Deputy Minister Namal Sudarshana.
Officials stated that the allowance will be provided for children between the ages of two and 13 whose parents are employed overseas, provided they are enrolled in registered daycare centres.
They further noted that approvals for the programme are currently in the final stages, and the payments are expected to be distributed monthly through District Secretariat offices directly to the registered daycare centres.
Minister Paulraj emphasized the importance of conducting public awareness programmes to ensure families are informed about the initiative, describing it as a positive step to support migrant worker families.
The Committee also discussed recruitment opportunities for female police officers. Officials revealed that applications have been called for 50 female Sub-Inspectors and 2,600 female Police Constables, including targeted recruitment campaigns aimed at increasing the number of Tamil-speaking officers in the police service.
