The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has approved a revision of electricity tariffs for the second quarter of 2026, which will come into effect from Monday (11).
The National System Operator submitted a revised cost estimate citing rising electricity generation costs due to higher fuel prices and an estimated revenue shortfall of around Rs. 38 billion for the current and upcoming quarters.
The government has agreed to provide a Rs. 15 billion subsidy to ease the impact on consumers, with the subsidy remaining in place until September 30.
Under the revised tariff structure, domestic consumers using up to 180 units will not face any increase, while higher consumption categories will see gradual adjustments. Electricity bills for households using 210 units and above will increase depending on consumption levels.
Religious institutions will also be exempt from tariff increases for usage up to 180 units, although higher usage categories will be affected. Government institutions are expected to face an average increase of around 11%.
In the industrial sector, small and medium-scale industries will remain largely unaffected, while large-scale industries are expected to see tariff increases of around 18%.
