Opposition to Submit No - Confidence Motion Against Justice Minister Next Week

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Ajith P. Perera says the opposition will submit its no-confidence motion against Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara to the Speaker of Parliament next week.

Perera alleged that the Justice Minister has failed to carry out his responsibilities and neglected his duties.

The opposition decided to move the no-confidence motion, accusing the Minister of failing to uphold his responsibility and accountability over the safety of prison officers and inmates who lost their lives during the unrest at Negombo Prison.

Opposition MPs, led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, signed the no-confidence motion in Parliament on July 10.

This is not the first no-confidence motion initiated by the opposition. Earlier, it moved a similar motion against former Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody over the substandard coal controversy.

The debate on that motion was held in Parliament on April 10, where it was defeated by a majority of 104 votes. A total of 153 MPs voted against the motion, while 49 MPs voted in favour.

The opposition had also taken steps to bring a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya in January.

That motion was signed by opposition MPs on January 7, citing alleged shortcomings in the Government's education reforms, including concerns over content considered unsuitable for children, subject-related issues, and the Government's failure to take adequate measures to address those concerns.
