The death toll from devastating flash floods along the Nepal-China Himalayan border has risen to at least 750, with more than 3,000 people still missing, as rescue operations entered their fifth day on Sunday.
In Nepal, authorities reported at least 734 deaths, while nearly 2,500 people remain unaccounted for. Separately, Chinese authorities confirmed 16 deaths and 546 missing people in Tibet’s Gyirong County, bringing the combined confirmed toll to at least 750 dead and more than 3,000 missing.
Rescue teams in both Nepal and China are battling deep mud, swollen rivers and the threat of further flooding as they search for thousands of people who remain missing after a massive wall of water and debris swept through communities along the Himalayan border.
The scale of the disaster has also created challenges in identifying victims. Nepalese authorities have begun burying unidentified bodies after collecting DNA samples and documenting the remains, allowing the victims to be identified later and returned to their families for traditional funeral rites.
Rescue and recovery operations are continuing as authorities work to locate survivors and account for those still missing.
