Main Suspect in Teldeniya Murder Case Arrested in Jaffna

The main suspect in the Teldeniya murder case, in which the body of a woman was recently discovered inside a parked vehicle, has been arrested in Jaffna, police confirmed.

According to the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Nuwara Eliya Division, the suspect and his wife were arrested in the Jaffna area by officers from the Jaffna Crime Investigation Unit and the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit. The arrests were made after authorities received information that the couple had travelled by bus from Wellawatte to Jaffna on Tuesday (24).

Police said the suspect was wearing a face mask at the time of his arrest, while his wife had allegedly disguised herself as a Muslim woman in an apparent attempt to avoid detection.

During questioning, the suspect reportedly told investigators that he had planned to travel from Vavuniya to Kurunegala, check on his two other children, and then surrender to the police.

The operation was conducted under the direct supervision of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rohan Olugala, Director of the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Unit.

Investigators have revealed that the couple had been staying in the Negombo and Chilaw areas over the past few days and had allegedly attempted to leave the country by sea.

The suspects are expected to be handed over to the Nuwara Eliya Police for further investigations.

The case came to light after Teldeniya Police received an anonymous telephone call reporting that a woman's body was inside a parked vehicle. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the vehicle locked and, after forcing it open, discovered the body inside.

The victim was identified as a 33-year-old physiotherapist attached to Ampara Hospital and a resident of Weligama.

Preliminary investigations suggested that the victim's boyfriend may have transported her body in the vehicle and abandoned it at the location before fleeing.

Further inquiries revealed that the woman had been staying at a hotel in Nuwara Eliya from June 3 to June 16. CCTV footage reportedly showed her boyfriend carrying her while she was unconscious during that period.

Police also confirmed that the initial report to Teldeniya Police was made by a person believed to be the boyfriend. However, he later disappeared and had been evading arrest until his capture in Jaffna.
