Influenza Cases Rise in Sri Lanka, 35% of Samples Test Positive

The Epidemiology Unit has reported a rise in influenza cases in Sri Lanka over the past three to four weeks, with approximately 35% of samples collected last week testing positive for the virus.

Chief Epidemiologist Consultant Dr. Palitha Karunapema said the increase had been detected through the country’s disease surveillance system.

Speaking at a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau, Dr. Karunapema noted that many of the coughs, colds and fever cases currently being reported are associated with influenza infections.

However, he urged the public not to panic, explaining that most patients recover within three to four days with treatment and without developing serious complications.

He cautioned that pregnant women, young children, older adults and people with underlying health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease, are at greater risk of developing complications from influenza.

Dr. Karunapema explained that the virus spreads mainly through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes, as well as through contact.

He advised people experiencing influenza symptoms to stay at home and rest for two to three days to minimise the risk of transmitting the infection to others.

The public was also urged to follow preventive measures, including washing hands frequently with soap and wearing face masks when experiencing symptoms of infection.

Health officials emphasised the importance of taking precautions, particularly among high-risk groups, while reassuring the public that there is no need for unnecessary alarm.
