India Introduces New Law to Regulate and Restrict Online Gambling from May 1

The Government of India has reportedly introduced the “Promotion and Regulation of Online Gambling Act – 2025 (PROG Act)”, aimed at preventing financial losses and deaths linked to online gaming. The law is set to come into effect from May 1.

Under the new legislation, online gambling and real-money gaming activities will be prohibited and fully banned. However, non-monetary recreational games such as chess and similar skill-based games will continue to be allowed.

As part of the framework, a new commission will be established under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to oversee online gaming activities. This body will be responsible for reviewing and determining whether games comply with regulations within 90 days.

The law will also make it mandatory for all online gaming platforms operating in India to register with the commission.

Gaming companies will be required to implement safeguards such as age verification systems, time limits on gameplay, child monitoring tools, and counseling support for individuals affected by gaming addiction.

In case of disputes, users must first approach the gaming company. If unresolved, appeals can be made to the Online Gaming Commission within 30 days, followed by escalation to the Secretary of the Ministry of Information Technology if necessary.

The government has stated that the primary goal of the legislation is to protect citizens’ financial stability, mental health, and social well-being.
