to the media after arriving at the Colombo High Court, Rajapaksa claimed the government was abusing its overwhelming parliamentary majority and executive powers.
"The government's madness has become very intense. It has become insane with power. Despite having 159 MPs and the powers of the President, it has become unbearable. It jumps without knowing the depth of the ground. Only after it jumps will it realize how deep it has fallen" he said.
Rajapaksa said he would continue to appear before court in several long-standing cases as scheduled. While expressing confidence in the independence of the judiciary, he said he did not share the same confidence in the police, alleging that the Sri Lanka Police had become politicized.
He also accused the government of exerting pressure on the independence of the judiciary through ongoing discussions on extending the tenure of the current Chief Justice.
Commenting on proposed constitutional changes, Rajapaksa argued that constitutional amendments should not be introduced to target individuals, noting that similar amendments in the past had later required further changes. He alleged that the government was attempting to introduce a constitutional amendment aimed at a single individual and urged it to learn from past experience.
Rajapaksa further said the government should focus on the economic hardships faced by the public, including the rising cost of living, challenges confronting farmers and fishermen, and the increasing tax burden, instead of prioritizing constitutional amendments related to the tenure of superior court judges.
