The government is considering raising the minimum age for engaging in three-wheeler passenger transport services to 40 years, Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage said.
Hewage said young people should not enter the three-wheeler taxi industry immediately after leaving school, stressing the importance of directing them towards higher education and vocational training.
“We expect to increase the age for entering the three-wheeler profession to 40 years. Young people should not be able to leave school and immediately take a three-wheeler onto the road,” he said.
The Deputy Minister said the proposed change forms part of broader efforts to reform the education system and encourage young people to pursue education and skills development before entering the passenger transport sector.
