Farmers Urge Government to Open Paddy Warehouses and Ensure Fair Prices

Farmers have called on the authorities to immediately open government paddy warehouses to facilitate the purchase of paddy harvests, while also demanding that a fair and reasonable price be offered for their produce.

The farmers emphasized that although the Ministry of Commerce announced a certified purchase price for small-scale paddy farmers a few days ago, the rate remains insufficient to cover production costs.

They further alleged that the government paddy warehouse in the Hingurana–Perenigama area has not yet been opened for paddy procurement, causing delays and financial difficulties for cultivators during the current harvesting period.

The farmers have urged the relevant authorities to take swift action to ensure proper procurement mechanisms are in place and to provide a more sustainable pricing structure for their harvest.
