The Sri Lanka Livestock Producers’ Association has warned that chicken and egg prices could increase during the upcoming festive season due to delays in obtaining approval for maize imports.
Association President Ajith Gunasekara said the production of chicken and eggs is declining rapidly as rice is increasingly being used as a substitute for maize in animal feed.
He also said approximately 20% of small-scale farmers and producers have left the industry due to the ongoing shortage of maize.
The Association warned that unless a swift solution is found to address the maize shortage, livestock production could decline further, potentially resulting in higher market prices for chicken and eggs during the upcoming festive season.
