Baby Snake Allegedly Found in Rice and Curry at Pilawoos Bambalapitiya; Investigation Launched

A video circulating on social media has triggered controversy after a man claimed he found a baby snake in a rice and curry plate served to him at the popular Pilawoos restaurant in Bambalapitiya.

The footage shows what appears to be the head of a small snake-like creature in the meal. The individual who shared the video alleged that the discovery was made while he was dining at the restaurant on the morning of February 12.

However, the management of Pilawoos Bambalapitiya strongly denied the allegation, insisting that such an incident could not have occurred at their establishment.

“It is not possible for such a thing to happen from our end,” the restaurant manager told the Media.

He said Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) had visited the premises shortly after the video surfaced to verify the claim.

The manager further stated that several customers had contacted the restaurant identifying the individual in the video as a social media influencer, suggesting that the footage may have been created to attract online views.

Meanwhile, Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. K. Sriprathapan, confirmed that authorities have launched an investigation into the matter, although no formal complaint has been lodged so far.

“We have initiated an investigation into the incident and will obtain samples. If any hygiene-related issue is identified, we will not hesitate to take legal action,” Dr. Sriprathapan said.

He also noted that legal action had been taken against the same restaurant a few weeks ago over hygiene concerns detected on the floor of a kitchen area that was under construction. “We have obtained fines for that as well,” he added.

Further action, he said, will depend on the findings of the ongoing inspection and laboratory analysis.
